His other titles were first Marquis and then Duke of La Meilleraye, Duke of Rethel, Baron of Parthenay and of Saint-Maixtent, Count of Secondigny, Seigneur of Le Boisliet, La Lunardière, La Jobelinière and Villeneuve. De La Porte was also a cousin of Cardinal Richelieu. In 1639, he led Louis XIII’s army and laid siege to Hesdin. After its capture de La Porte was made Marechal de France. In 1642, he conquered Perpignan, Salses-Le-Château and Roussilon for the crown.
A similar portrait of de La Porte, on canvas and measuring 73 x 52 cm, by an unknown artist, is kept at the Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles. In this portrait the sitter appears of slightly older age.
