(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
Jupiter and Antiope,
oil on panel, 36.3 x 40.5 cm, framed
Jupiter and Antiope was a popular subject for both Rubens and his most gifted pupils such as Anthony van Dyck. The muscular back of the present satyr, whose form Jupiter has taken to ravish the sleeping Antiope, reveals Rubens’s reception of the powerful, classicising forms of the Bolognese Carracci school, and while not directly relatable to an extant Rubens’ version of the subject, it appears to be by an artist with access to Rubens’s workshop models.
An attribution to Frans Wouters (1612–1659) has been suggested based on the handling of the figures. Wouters, assisted Rubens both in his workshop, and on the large-scale decorations for Antwerp’s Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi in 1635.
