Kessel emigrated to the United States in the Twenties, in 1944 he became war correspondent for Life Magazine. After the Second World War he kept on photographing stories on ideological struggles and territorial disputes around the world until the mid Fifties when he started a series of photos dedicated to European religious architecture. Most probably while in Venice where he photographed Saint Mark, he met Zoran Mušicˇ to whom this work is dedicated; later on Dimitri Kessel dedicated this same painting to Shirley Farmer who became his wife in 1964.
