The composition presumably goes back to a mirror-inverted etching after the fresco “Saints Abdon and Sennen burying Christian martyrs” by Guillaume Courtois in the first of the right arcades in the central nave of S. Marco. For the etching see Robert-Dumesnil 213. An oil sketch for the fresco is kept in the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (Inv. 1487).
