Private collection, Austria.
The composition is identical with the painting „Ducks on a blue water” which is published and illustrated in the catalogue raisonné of Stein/Koester 1988 (No. 827; oil on canvas, 60 x 86 cm). It was customary for Koester to make drawings for a later execution in oil or pastel. The execution of the final work in the studio was frequently anticipated by pencil sketches in the open air. He sometimes varied the motifs of the preliminary sketches on the canvas but in this case he had transferred the present drawing directly to the canvas.
