Andrew Plimer
(Wellington 1763-1837 Brighton)
Portrait of a young lady against cloudy background, watercolour on ivory, 7,4 x 6 cm, framed in a medallion executed in hairwork and engraved "Miss Crawford by Andrew Plimer", (Hu)
Subject to species protection (ASA).
Andrew Plimer belonged to the most productive English miniature painters of the late 18th century. Since 1781 he learned in the studio Richard Cosway, whose successor he became in regard of quality and style. He portrayed his patrons with delicate watercolours and long brushstrokes. He developed a specific style which made his works distinctive. The colours of the dress and the cloudy background are executed in subtle hues. The artist shaded parts of the face with brownish brushstrokes and made it the center of the miniature by also accentuating the pupils with dark colours. Miniatures by Andrew Plimer are preserved in many public collections. Together with Smart, Cosway und Engleheart the artist belonged to the most popular miniature painters in England (Robert Keil).
