Hugo Darnaut was one of the important Austrian painters of the so-called “Stimmungsimpressionism” (Mood Impressionism). He studied with Eduard Peithner Lichtenfels at the Vienna Academy and with Andreas Achenbach, Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann in Düsseldorf. From 1877 on he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Between 1893 and 1912 Darnaut rented Plankenberg Castle in the Vienna Woods, which accomodated a school of landscape painting until the death of Emil Jakob Schindler.
