Workshop of Frans Pourbus II

Workshop of Frans Pourbus II - Dipinti antichi II

(Antwerp 1569–1622 Paris)
Portrait of the sculptor Pierre de Francqueville (1548–1615),
oil on canvas, 47.5 x 38.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany

The present portrait is closely related to a depiction of de Francqueville that is conserved in the Uffizi, Florence (oil on canvas, 49 x 37 cm) as attributed to Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569–1622) and is suggested to have been executed during Pourbus’ stay in Paris between 1609 and 1615.

The Northern mannerist sculptor Pierre de Francqueville assisted the renowned Giambologna (1529–1608) with the master’s monumental commissions for the Medici in Florence, where he was known as Pietro Francavilla, before moving to the court of French King Henri IV. Of note are his four figures of bound captives, conserved in the Louvre, commissioned for the pedestal of a significant equestrian statue of Henri IV that was destroyed in the French Revolution.
