Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein - Arte contemporanea II

(New York 1923–1997)
Shipboard Girl, 1965, signed rf Lichtenstein, color offset lithograph on thin wove paper, image size 66 x 48.4 cm, sheet size 68.8 x 50.9 cm, pub. Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, framed

Provenance:
DJT Fine Art, New York
Private Collection, Germany

Literature:
Mary Lee Corlett, Ruth E. Fine, Roy Lichtenstein, The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné 1948–1997, New York 2002, no. II.6

For the 1965 “Shipboard Girl” Roy Lichtenstein used his typical printing technique of Ben-Day dots, which in their composition create the image. A blond, young woman with red lips on the deck of a ship is depicted here. What the protagonist is thinking about and what circumstances brought her to the ship remains hidden from the viewer and provokes further reflection and thought. The reduced colour palette and the exclusive use of the primary colours red, yellow and blue intensify the comic-like character of the colour offset lithograph and draw the viewer’s attention less to the subject and more to the artist’s technique.
