Massaki atari yori Suijin no mori Uchigawa Sekiya no sato wo miru zu (View of the Suijin shrine from Massaki, the small bay of Uchigawa and the village Sekiya no sato), from the "Meisho Edo hyakkei" series (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Uoya Eikichi, aratame censor seal missing because all sides have been trimmed, dated 1857 (snake 8/month 8). According to Matthi Forrer, Hiroshige, Munich, 1991, plate 101, the sheet is a middle-period print, since the title cartouche here is two-coloured (white and red). In this variant the bokashi on the opposite bank is deep blue. According to Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler, Meisho Edo hyakkei, Cologne 2001, p.240, this shows a round window bordered by a sliding door pointing northeast towards the Sumidagawa River. The plum branch, which in this case rises into the evening sky, is testimony to Hiroshige’s high aesthetic confidence that has captivated western and eastern viewers alike. The red colours are slightly faded, attached to support, 34.1 x 22.5 cm, (CT)
