Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Seki-Honjin hayadachi (Early Departure from the Daimyo’s Lodging), from the series: “Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi”, nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoheido), censor seal kiwame. According to Matthi Forrer, Hiroshige, Munich, London, NY. 1991, no. 27, the present print is a later impression because the lanterns in the background are red instead of ochre. The present sheet is also comparable with that from British Museum, no. 1906,1220, 0.818: there is a blank segment at the lower edge of the border line in the last quarter, and at the lower left of the grey tent roof. In the grey in front of the tree on the left there is also a blank spot in the print, at the ridge of the roof there is a minimal bend into the picture. Minimally stained, smoothed creases, backed, trimmed outside the border line, kiwame seal clearly visible, 24.7 x 36.3 cm, mounted,(CT)
