Lotto No. 197

Bencini, Vienna, c. 1780

Bencini, Vienna, c. 1780 - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(artist from the family of Antonio Bencini) A portrait of the archduke and later Emperor Francis II wearing the Golden Fleece, watercolour and gouache on ivory, oval, 6 x 5 cm, in a guilded brass frame, (Hu)

Species protection A

Emperor Francis (1768-1835) was born in Florence. He was the son of Emperor Leopold II. and Maria Ludovica. The young archduke is wearing a fashionable frock and the Order of the Golden Fleeze which he had received from the moment of his birth on because he was the firstborn. The unsigned miniature shows the typical pointillist painting technique of Bencini with his characteristic shadings in blue and grey in parts of the face. In the Imperial account books the name Bencini is repeatedly mentioned from the 1740s far into the 1780s. A portrait of Empress Maria Ludovica is preserved in the Imperial collection of miniatures, which is signed "Bencini jun." (R. Keil, Die Porträtminiaturen des Hauses Habsburg, Vienna 1999, Cat. 180.)
