Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Arte Asiatica

Cranes, diptych in vertical format consisting of two assembled oban sheets. The upper sheet is without inscriptions. The lower sheet is signed: Hiroshige hitsu, there is a red artist’s seal under the signature: Ichiryusai, above the signature is a censor seal in the form of a date: (horse fve=5/1858), the lower sheet features only Manchurian cranes, while the upper sheet shows Manchurian cranes and white-naped cranes. There is a longitudinal trace in the blue base plate of the lower sheet below the right part of the spray, which is common to all original sheets. There are sheets with publisher's seal (Kansendo) (Museum of Fine Arts Boston no. 2016.925a-b) and sheets without (Richard Kruml). The sheets with publisher’s seal are the earlier prints. It can be assumed that the plates were sold after Hiroshige’s death and the publisher’s seal was removed. Initially, there was no dark blue overprint at the top of the wave before the spray begins. However, at the end of the printing period of the sheets with publisher's seal, this overprint was applied (Worcester Art Museum No. 1901.59.1465) and it is found in all the sheets without publisher’s seal known to Gordon Friese, to whom we owe this expert opinion. The sheets without publisher’s seal show a number of small losses to the border lines, indicating that these are later prints. In G. Friese’s opinion, the present diptych is a later, possibly posthumous print without publisher’s seal (but probably still from the Edo period). Both sheets have visible oval stains to the lower margin, there is a longitudinal trace in the middle, album holes are visible in the upper sheet on the left and in the lower sheet on the right, overall slightly stained, the lower left margin of the lower sheet slightly damaged, traces of glue to the upper and lower corners, (both sheets together): 72.3 x 24.7 cm, (CT)
