Anselm Wagner was the son of the Viennese painter Michael Wagner who had settled in Transylvania. Anselm studied under Johann Jakob Stunder. He was influenced by Meyten’s Baroque style and in 1796 turned to the Rococo style, later on to a Neo-Classicist style. In the beginning he painted religious pictures, eventually he specialized in oil portraits, miniatures and pastels. In the 1790s he executed numerous portraits in Transylvania. Around 1799 Anselm Wagner traveled through Romania and painted portraits of the Gyulay family.
