Willy Eisenschitz * - Arte moderna

(Vienna 1889–1974)
View of St. Sulpice from the artist’s apartment in Paris, signed and dated W. Eisenschitz 1931, oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Austria

When Willy Eisenschitz moved to the small town of La Valette-du-Mar near Toulon on the Cote d’Azur in 1927, one of the happiest and most productive periods of his life began. From here the artist travelled regularly to Paris, where he successfully participated in exhibitions. He lived with his wife Claire Bertrand's mother in the district around Rue de Tournon, where he found the view of the church of Saint-Sulpice inspiring. Bouquets of flowers in front of windows are a frequent motif of these years. The present one is particularly captivating for its bright, fresh colour tone and loose brushwork and is a wonderful example of the painter’s love of nature as well as the city.
