Pierre Édouard Frère - Dipinti ad olio e acquerelli del 19° secolo

(Paris 1819-1886 Ecouen)
Winter Games (La glissade), signed, dated Edouard Frère.1872. oil on panel, 64 x 81 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy. “The most beautiful feature of modern art is its sympathy,” claimed painter Pierre Édouard Frère in an interview for Harper's New Monthly Magazine in November 1871. Frère showed interest in depictions portraying the lower classes with dignity and charm, glorifying the simplicity of their lives and work. After his education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Pierre Édouard Frère made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1843. He soon gained a reputation as a genre painter, especially for his touching, and often humorous, depictions of children. The present lot takes the viewer into a scene of great naturalness, where the children's joy is contagious.
