The letter is addressed to an unnamed doctor about Hugo Wolf and the young composer N. N. Jürgens: "I was recently reminded of my first acquaintance with Wolf's Lieder, which I made with you about 20 years ago, when I received a rather comprehensive package of song compositions from a young Düsseldorf composer named Jürgens for review. You may have heard of him. Although he is completely unknown to me, his talent seems worthy of attention and promotion. Like H. Wolf, he composes whole volumes of poetry, Gustav Falke and Martin Graf. His style does not ingeniously capture the text like Wolf, but his songs are easier to understand and not so difficult to perform".
