Anton Josef Pepino was born Josef Hirsch Gold into a Jewish family in Vienna. He converted to Catholicism in 1889 and in the same year moved to Dresden, where he worked as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He was a student of Anton Schrödl at the Vienna Academy, and his work was initially close to Austrian Impressionism. Around 1900 he adopted elements of Art Nouveau, of which the present painting is an excellent example.
