Lotto No. 27

Circle of Joachim Beuckelaer

Circle of Joachim Beuckelaer - Dipinti antichi I

(Antwerp 1533–1574)
A poultry seller at a market,
oil on panel, 130 x 110 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium

The present vivid scene, replete with Antwerp housewives and ruddy-faced market sellers, with beautifully rendered produce heaped high in the foreground is a characteristic example of a hand working in the close orbit of one of the pioneers of Flemish still-life painting, Joachim Beuckelaer. Beuckelaer, who likely trained in the workshop of his uncle, Pieter Aertsen (1508–1575), and like him often featured discreet biblical narratives in the background of his scenes, renders what appear everyday scenes with brio and painterly flair. While the present picture, differs subtly from the master’s handling, it both mimicks reality and revels in the beauty of nature’s, and by extension, God’s, bounty. The present panel may be compared with another work attributed to Beuckelaer, At The Market, conserved in the National Museum, Warsaw (inv. no. M.Ob.828 MNW).
