Lodewijk de Deyster was a history painter, draftsman and engraver. Active in Bruges, he made a formative trip to Italy, returning home in 1688 and bringing with him a flamboyant, Roman Baroque style. The present work is fairly unique within the master’s oeuvre. Only one other hunting still life by his hand is listed in the database of the RKD, The Hague under no. 1113256.
