The Prophet Jeremiah,
tempera on paper, laid down on canvas, 288 x 205.5 cm, unframed
The present study relates to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoe commissioned by Pope Julius II and painted between 1508 and 1512. The Book of Genesis was represented in the center of the ceiling and Michelangelo depicted portraits of Sibyls and the Prophets around the sides, to which the present study relates. The Prophet Jeremiah is the first figure on the left of the High Altar. He is represented as lost in meditation, and is sometimes interpreted as a self-portrait of Michelangelo, bemoaning his situation of being forced by Julius II to paint when he preferred to sculpt.
After its inauguration the Sistine Chapel became a veritable academy for young painters and a must-see destination for all the painters of the sixteenth century, who drew Michelangelo’s frescoes with passion and admiration. Prints and drawings were produced in the sixteenth century: the first to reproduce the vault in print was Marcantonio Raimondi, in 1512–1513.
