The Crucifixion with the Madonna, Saint Jerome, Mary Magdalen, Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint John the Evangelist,
tempera on panel, 58 x 55 cm, framed
Provenance:
Professor Tancred Borenius (1885–1948), London;
sale, Christie’s, London, 14 December 1923, lot 42 (as Early Italian School);
sale, Christie’s, New York, 6 June 2012, lot 68 (as Central Italian School, circa 1500);
Private collection, Switzerland
Literature:
C. Daly, A new Florentine painter for the late Quattrocento: the Master of the Samaritan Woman (and a note on a forgotten tondo by Raffaellino del Garbo), in: Colnaghi Studies Journal, vol. 11 (October 2022), p. 21 (as Master of the Samaritan Woman, perhaps to be identified as Niccolò Cartoni)
We are grateful to Christopher Daly for suggesting an attribution to the Master of the Samaritan Woman, perhaps to be identified as Niccolò Zoccolo, called Niccolò Cartoni (active in Tuscany, late 15th and early 16th Century) for the present painting.
