![Circle of the Brunswick Monogrammist - Dipinti antichi II Circle of the Brunswick Monogrammist - Dipinti antichi II](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A221110/normal/circle-of-the-brunswick-monogrammist-8282057.jpg)
(active first half of the 16th Century)
A brothel scene,
oil on panel, 33.7 x 47 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Germany
The present painting is a derivation after the original of very similar dimensions by the Brunswick Monogrammist in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main (inv. nr. 249). A copy is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. nr. 1652. E. I).
The artist’s identity has not yet been clarified with certainty. Max Joseph Friedländer identified him as the young Jan Sanders van Hemessen, whereas most scholars believe that the artist behind this name is actually Jan van Amstel (Antwerp circa 1500–1542). The name given to this anonymous painter is based on a monogrammed Banquet scene in the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig. According to art historical records, Jan van Amstel was the brother of the painter Pieter Aertsen and the brother-in-law of Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
