Collection of Elena Rizzieri (1922–2016), Rome;
where acquired by the present owner
The present composition relates to a painting of the same subject by Guido Reni, in a private collection in Milan (see S. Pepper, Guido Reni. L’opera completa, cat. no. 135, p. 277, pl. IX). Another similar version once belonged to the Barberini and is now conserved in the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica (see S. Pepper, op. cit., cat. no. 130, pp. 275–76, pl. 121), however, the composition has significant variations as it shows Mary Magdalen in full-length, her chest covered by her hair and clothing, contrary to the present painting and the Milan version. Reni return to the subject of the Magdalen on several occasions as the subject was highly requested by patrons of the period.
