![J. C. van der Hagen - Dipinti antichi II J. C. van der Hagen - Dipinti antichi II](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A221110/normal/j-c-van-der-hagen-8282174.jpg)
(The Hague 1676 – circa 1745 Dublin)
A view of a port with a fortification, possibly the Tower of Homage of Gibraltar,
signed lower right: …Hagen,
oil on panel, 33 x 40 cm, framed
Provenance:
Sir Bruce Stirling Ingram (1877–1963), London;
his sale, Sotheby’s London, 6 May 1964, lot 135 (as Willem van der Hagen);
with Hoogsteder, The Hague;
J. Westley, London;
sale, Christie’s, London, 26 July 1968, lot 8;
where acquired by Maragall, Barcelona
The present picture is registered in the archives of the RKD, The Hague at no: 296750.
The present panel is a typically refined work from the hand of Joris van der Hagen. Although active mainly in the Hague, painting city and landscapes of the Dutch capital and its surrounding countryside, the artist made several sea voyages. The present view appears to be a capriccio in which van der Hagen has depicted the Tower of Homage, usually situated high up upon the Rock of Gibraltar, at shore level, receiving a gun salute from a passing ship.
