...Gurschner was part of the society he painted in the late 1920s and 1930s. He went to their parties, holidayed in the Cote d'Azur, travelled between Europe and the USA. At the same time, his Tyrolean origins remained important to him, and he thought about the "simple life" of the mountain farmers and cherished religious interests. The clash of these different worlds is palpable in the work of Gurschner, an artist in whom "several jealously struggling souls" lived.
