Austrian School, 18th Century - Una Collezione dalla Stiria I

Styrian tournament scenes of the Lord of Schärffenberg, oil on canvas, each 110 x 152 cm, framed, (2), (GS)

The Authorities for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage intend to induce a procedure for the cultural protection of Lot 178. Therefore an export out of Austria will presumably not be possible.

Saleroom Notice:

Bitte beachten Sie die Änderung der Zuschreibung.

The pseudo-medieval tournament scenes depicted here (dated 1726 and 1732) refer to the knightly games organised by Count Johann Leopold von Schärffenberg in Hohenwang in the Styrian Mürztal. Count Leopold Schärffenberg, who lived in the 18th century, was an Imperial and Royal Secret Councillor and War Commissary in Mürztal and Kammertal. He held the last genuine knightly tournament on Upper Styrian soil on 10 September 1738. Count Leopold himself opened the battle game, which began with lances and bows. Counts Franz von Heussenstamm and Georg von Stubenberg fought in knightly jousting (BLKÖ, 1875).
