Lotto No. 141

Claude Gelée, called Claude Lorrain attributed to (1600-1682)

A landscape study with trees and a figure group, tracing of the recto’s outlines resulting in a reversed image of the same landscape on the reverse, pen, brush and brown ink, brown wash, over traces of black chalk, on laid paper, indistinctly inscribed at lower margin, 30 x 39,5 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Jerome Stonborough (1873-1938) and Margarethe Stonborough-Wittgenstein (Vienna 1882-1958 Vienna);
their heirs – Private collection Vienna.

Compare:
Marcel Roethlisberger, Claude Lorrain. The Drawings, 2 Vols., University California Press, Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1968, Cat. No. 305, 307, 537, pp. 155-156.

The present double-sided landscape study can be stylistically assigned to the late 1630s and early 1640s and is comparable with a number of the artist’s drawings from the so-called „Campagna-Album“ and the „Tivoli-Album“ which were also executed during this period. Its technique in pen and brown ink and its atmospheric wash in brown ink can be found in numerous sheets of that time; a particular feature is, however, the tracing of the outlines of the landscape which appear reversed on the verso, and can be observed also in some other drawings of those years. Particularly noteworthy in this respect are the “Landscape with a tree” (ca. 1638) in the Teyler Musem, Haarlem (Inv. L 047; Roethlisberger 1968, Claude Lorrain. The Drawings, No. 305), a „Landscape with trees“ (ca. 1635-40) in Windsor Castle (Inv. RCN 911,927; Roethlisberger 1968, No. 307), a „Landscape with two figures under a tree“ (ca. 1640-45) in the British Museum (Inv. Oo, 7.216; Roethlisberger 1968, No. 537) and the drawing in the Teyler Museum, Haarlem (Inv. K VII 016; exh. cat. Paris-Haarlem 2011, Fig. 34), which was only recently attributed to Claude Lorrain. According to Roethlisberger the outline drawings on the versos may have been executed after the artist had completed the drawing on the recto, presumably in order to serve him as a model for another version of the motif (vgl. Roethlisberger 1968, S. 155-156).

The composition of the present landscape seems unfinished on the right half of the sheet; moreover, parts of the original wash may have gone lost, due to a water damage and an old restoration of the sheet in the past. In addition, the inscription at the lower margin of the sheet appears to be largely washed out. Despite these deficiences in preservation, however, the artist’s drawing style is unmistakable, so that an attribution of the sheet to Claude Lorrain seems plausible when compared to other drawings by the artist. The drawing can therefore be regarded as an important addition to the corpus of Claude Lorrain’s drawings.
