“I care how the details function. I insist that the sculpture surfaces be read carefully and slowly, even though just a moment before you saw the ensemble forms as essentially geometric and monumental. The detail in relief and the mirror-polished surface give the viewer a great deal to look at, to capture and hold the eye. The interior forms make it a more complicated and interesting visual experience. I remember how for me the details of surface in Jackson Pollock’s large canvases were so full of intrigue – his drips and marks had so much energy”.
