Robert Longo - Arte contemporanea I

(born 1953 in New York)
Study for Tiger Head (No. 1B), 2011, titled, signed, dated Robert Longo 2011, ink, charcoal on parchment paper, 50.8 x 38.7 cm (sheet size 60.5 x 45 cm), framed

Provenance:
Studio Robert Longo, New York
Metro Pictures, New York (label)
Hoffman Fine Art Photography, Munich
Private Collection, Germany - acquired from the above

Drawing on the Old Masters' use of chiaroscuro, Robert Longo applies the rich tonality of charcoal to achieve dramatic range in his drawings, thus demonstrating his meticulous photo-realistic draughtsmanship. The transposition of medium is crucial within Longo’s oeuvre. The temporal difference between taking a photograph in an instant and creating a drawing over months allows Longo to internalise the image on a very detailed level. Combined with the intimacy of a portrait, these two factors attempt to slow the image down to allow the viewer to take in the artwork in a more focused manner.
Longo presents us with a monumental close-up of the tiger’s head by theatrically cropping the pictorial space. This regal and powerful creature of nature seems to come alive as it looks at the viewer directly and intensely.
