Private Collection Germany, for three generations.
This lot will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné edited by Eckart Lingenbauer and Olga Sugrobova-Roth.
We are grateful to Dr Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her scientific assistance. Belyanas, up to 100 m long, were loaded with timber on the upper Volga and completely dismantled at the point of arrival. The timber used to build the ship was also recycled. Built only for one trip, the Belyanas were not tarred. The light-coloured decorticated wood gave the ships their name (Belyana from bely = white).
