An important cabinetmakers’ guild flourished in Chiavari already in the golden age of the Maritime Republic of Genoa. The art of chair making in Chiavari started in 1796, when the “società economica” (a group of aristocratic intellectuals) organised a competition to encourage local craftsmen to create new chair designs. The first chairs of this new generation were created at the beginning of the 19th century by Gaetano Descalzi, nicknamed „Campanino“. This name is still today synonymous with the ancestor of Chiavari chairs, world famous in their unsurpassable synthesis of lightness and strength.
