Lotto No. 22

Rudolf Kalvach

(Vienna 1883-1932 Kosmonosy, Czechoslovak Republic)
"Schubkarren - Triester Hafenleben 2", 1907/08, woodcut on brown Japanese paper, block size 41.4 x 41.8 cm, sheet size 43.2 x 43.5 cm, from the series of 16 woodcuts with motifs of Trieste harbour life, losses and tears to the margins (one of them into the illustration), partly closed with old adhesive tape, browned, (RAC)

The woodcut work of Rudolf Kalvach rarely appears on the auction market. This woodcut was printed from a composite block. In the present example, only a very fine dividing line indicates the composite block. Another example, illustrated in 'Fantastisch! Rudolf Kalvach. Wien und Triest um 1900' (ill. 4.2) shows a much more cearly visible parting line. Kalvach also used this method for other woodcuts in the series 'Triester Hafenleben' (ibid. ill. 4.1, 4.3.2 and 4.3.3).
