This bronze sculpture features a figure carrying a suitcase in the shape of an arrow, two motifs dear to Folon. This character is a central figure in his universe, and inhabits his work. He is an anti-hero tossed between dreams and anxieties, both the artist‘s double and the spectator‘s projection, a symbol of the human in a modern world of confused reference points.
The character is reduced to its simplest expression: two dots for the eyes, a line for the mouth, a hat that prevents the artist from drawing hair, and a large coat. The arrow he carries is a recurring motif in Folon’s work. During his early creative years in the 1960s and 1970s, Folon was captivated by arrows. For Folon, this elementary sign denotes all the injunctions to which man is constantly subjected.
