Otto GLASER (1926–2017)
A collection of Austrian art in Ireland
The Irish telecom pioneer Otto Glaser (1926-2017), in reverence to his Viennese origins, preferred to collect Austrian painters and motifs from the former crown lands of the monarchy. As passionate sailor, he also collected portraits of imperial yachts and battle scenes from the Austro-Hungarian navy. This motif was at the forefront of his collecting and Glaser meticulously attempted to unravel the scenes and ships depicted, as evidenced by the numerous correspondences in his document folders. His work took him regularly to Venice, where he stayed at Hotel Cipriani, and to Vienna, its Hotel Imperial and the Viennese art trade. There he acquired the pictures that would also remind him of his homeland and the history of the Austrian monarchy in Ireland.
