Gabriel Ambrosius Donath

“Thieme-Becker” about Donath: “Since the 1730s, Donath’s favourite subjects had been architectural motifs, especially interiors of (Gothic) churches and castles, which he populated with small figures, almost never leaving himself out. These pictures are mostly painted on copper, occasionally also on tin or brass, and generally feature small dimensions…” In 1733, Donath was appointed “court and cabinet painter” to Maria Josepha of Austria, Electress of Saxony and Queen of Poland, whose heraldic emblem appears in the present painting. It is known that Donath usually added the combined coat of arms of Saxony, Poland, and Austria to his best compositions, above all to those he made for the queen.
