Portrait of Francesco I d’Este (1610–1658), three-quarter length,
oil on canvas, 99 x 76.5 cm, framed
The present painting relates to other portraits of the Duke of Modena, such as the portrait attributed to Ludovico Lana (Fototeca Zeri, no. 57291) and the equestrian portrait of Francesco I in Sassuolo, Palazzo Ducale. A large number of portraits of Francesco I are known. The most similar one to the present painting is a full-length portrait attributed to Jan van Ghelder, possibly after Justus Sustermans, which is dated to circa 1630 (Palazzo Ducale di Modena, Accademia Militare, in the deposit of the Galleria Estense). The present composition is reduced in size, with slight variations in the background.
