Lotto No. 140

Jacopo Fabris

(Venice 1689 –1761 Copenhagen)
Piazza del Popolo, Rome,
oil on canvas, 54 x 78 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European collection

The present painting depicts Piazza del Popolo, Rome, as it looked around the middle of the 18th century. The ground is not yet paved, and the large building on the left makes it clear that the shape of the square is still trapezoidal and not elliptical as it was from the late 19th century onwards. The Flaminian obelisk, in the foreground, still lacks the base with the Egyptian-style stone lions added by Giuseppe Valadier (1762–1839) in 1823 and, next to it, it is possible to still see the 16th-century fountain now located in Piazza Nicosia, Rome.

Several versions of the this composition are known, including one in Saltram House, Devon (National Trust, inv. no. 872122) given to Jacopo Fabris (circa 1689–1761). Fabris was a Venetian painter who specialised in cityscapes, and his vedute paintings were collected by the European artistocracy during the Grand Tour.
