The present watercolour is presumably a copy by Leopold Rottmann after the painting "Lonely Landscape with flock of sheep" (Oil on canvas, 76,5x 69,5 cm, Oldenburg, Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Inv. Nr. 393) by his brother Carl , which is dated to late work of the latter. A comparable watercolour was discovered on the Munich art market in 1977. (Comp. Bierhaus-Rödiger 1978, WZ-Nr. 700).
