Felix Ivo Leicher
(Wagstadt/Bilovec 1727–1812 Vienna)
The Guardian Angel,
oil on canvas, 148 x 83 cm, framed
The present painting is accompanied by a written certificate issued by Monika Dachs-Nickel, Vienna (June 2015). Ms Dachs-Nickel thus writes: “The two-figure group is presented against a dark landscape and a dark sky, out of which a yellow ray of light descends, highlighting the angel and child. The choice of colour for the angel’s blue dress and yellow cloak corresponds to the child’s brown and blue garments. The spotlight-like ray of light is remarkable, striking the head and shoulder of the angel, and irradiating both. The fashioning of the fabric and flesh tones is dynamic, and is testament to the talent of the artist. The rendering of the angel’s head may be described as particularly characteristic, as the face appears to be put on, like a mask, and the eyes are directed to the sky in an exaggerated manner. Both are unique signature features of Maulbertsch’s assistant, Felix Ivo Leichter (1727–1812).”
