The present painting was probably part of a series depicting the five senses. Several such series are known, which used this composition for the representation of sight. Its author can be ascribed to the circle of the Antwerp painter Abraham Janssens. The same motif was also used for an engraving after a preparatory drawing by Pieter van Mol used (cf G. J. M. Weber, Weitere Erkenntnisse zu Gemälden in Schloss Rheydt, Werkgruppe ohne Künstlernamen, IV, Die Rekonstruktion einer Serie der Vier Jahreszeiten aus dem Kreis von Abraham Janssens, in: Rheydter Jahrbuch 21, 1994, pp. 211–225).
