Raphael von Ambros was a pupil of Hans Makart at the Vienna Academy and achieved recognition reaching far beyond the city’s boundaries. His works were exhibited at the Paris Salon, amongst others. He was the oldest son of the composer and substitute senior public prosector August Wilhelm Ambros (1816-1876). Ambros was elevated to the Austrian nobility in 1878.
