Manner of Albrecht Dürer

Manner of Albrecht Dürer - Obrazy starých mistrů

Portrait of a scholar,
oil on panel, 54 x 43 cm, framed

The present enigmatic portrait has so far eluded a convincing attribution. The highly detailed underdrawing (see illustration) and impressive execution suggest an artist of the German High Renaissance School. Stylistic similarities with works from the circle of Dürer, but also with paintings by Faber von Kreuznach or the so- called ‘Dürer Renaissance’ have been noted. An alternative attribution to a painter active in Flanders, possibly Bruges, has also been suggested.

Scientific analyses have detected pigments coherent with a sixteenth century work from both Flanders or Germany, including lead antimony oxide that was used in sixteenth century Italy, that was also known as ‘giallolino di Fiandra’ or ‘di Alemagna’ suggesting that its use in the present, northern painting is entirely plausible (see C. Seccaroni, Giallorino: Storia dei pigmenti gialli di natura sintetica. Dal ‘vetrio giallo per patre nostro e ambre’ al ‘giallo di Napoli’, Roma 2006, chapters 8-9).
