In 1975 Mercedes-Benz decided to give the S-Class an ultimate upgrade offering the 450 SEL with a 6,9 litre engine, the largest serially produced engine used in a motorcar in European post-war history! Only 7.380 units of the present Superbenz were built, making it the ideal S-Class for collectors.

The present Mercedes was completed on 18 June 1979 in a combination of black/ leather bamboo, complete with air condition and tinted windows. The 6.9 was delivered to Costa Rica, where it was supposed to have been the official vehicle of the Russian ambassador. In November 2004 the saloon was exported to Germany, the contract lists 90,000 km.
In 2005, the 6.9 was purchased by the consigner who had it partially restored in 2006, as the paint, hat rest, and carpeting had suffered from the sun. The car was given a professional paint job, i.e. with the windows removed and window seals, the carpeting and hat rest were replaced. The leather upholstery on the other hand is in original condition! The wheel rims were overhauled, powder coated, and fitted with new Michelin XWX. The exhaust system was also replaced using, according to Mercedes, the last available original 6.9 system. The air conditioning was filled up and the compressor unit replaced. The air suspension was also recently overhauled by Mercedes. Since then the Mercedes has covered a mere 16,000 km. The present 6.9 is equally impressive at a first glance as it is on closer inspection, still living up to its earlier image. The colour scheme contributes to its special flair!
