Robert Russ was the eldest son of the painter Franz Russ, and brother of the painter Franz Seraph Russ. He was only 14 years old when he joined the landscape class taught by Albert Zimmermann at the Vienna Academy. His contemporaries at the Academy included Eugen Jettl, Emil Jakob Schindler and Rudolf Ribarz. He found his subject matter mainly in the surroundings of Vienna, in the Alps, South Tyrol and Italy, and quickly drew inspiration from the beauty of the Wachau. As an important representative of Austrian Mood Impressionism, he distinguished himself through his charming and atmospheric portrayals of the behaviour of light; a feature of the current work, a depiction of the Passauerhof in Stein an der Donau. Here the painter has captured the many variations of mood in the farmhouse yard in the summer light, using his very characteristic application of colours with great skill and sensitivity.
