B. Bachmann-Hohmann

B. Bachmann-Hohmann - Obrazy 19. století

(active in Leipzig around 1850)
Battle of Karakal between the Russian Cavalry under their Supreme Commander Andrei Nikolaevich Karamzin (1814–1854) and an overpowering Turkish army on 28 May 1854, signed, dated B. B. Hohmann 1855, oil on canvas, 73 x 98 cm, framed, (W)

This scene from the Crimean war depicts the ‘Defeat at Caracal’ on 16 (28) May 1854, in which the Russian army under Supreme Commander Andrei Nikolaevich Karamzin was heavily defeated. The Russian commander lacked wartime experience and there was far too little ammunition for the guns, so that the Turks with their numerically far superior army under commander Colonel Haci-Mehmet-Bey, here seen on the grey horse, were able to utterly destroy their Russian counterparts.
