As the seventh child of a modest farming family and whose father was a churchwarden, as a young boy Eduard von Grützner drew everything that fell into his hands. The local priest opened the way for him to study art in Munich at the private school run by Herman Dyck. In 1867 he transferred to the class run by Carl Theodor von Piloty and in 1870 he moved into his own studio in Munich. He was awarded the title of Professor in 1886 and was knighted in 1916.
