Gabriel Ritter von Max

Gabriel Ritter von Max - Obrazy 19. století

(Prague 1840–1915 Munich)
The Scholars, signed G. v. Max, oil on canvas, 60.5 x 45 cm, framed, (Rei)

Gabriel von Max had exceptionally wide interests and was an extremely engaged personality. His first artistic training in history painting came from his father, the sculptor Joseph Max, and later in Prague, Vienna and Munich. In 1867 he advanced to become one of the most influential artists of his time as the result of his work Martyress. He was Professor of history painting in Munich for five years from 1883. However, in 1884 he became a member of the Theosophical Society and started intensely examining the anthropology of apes which he bred at his estate on Lake Starnberg. As a much admired ‘soul painter’ he created highly sensitive works on subjects including love, religion and death. No other artist of this period so deeply mirrors the culture, art and science of their era in their work.
