J. A. Goupil exhibited at the Salon from the age of 18. Starting as a portrait painter, he was primarily known for his scenes of the French Revolution for which he enjoyed success. He was frequently awarded medals. The powerful brushstrokes and harmonious integration of his figures into their surroundings are characteristic of his oeuvre.
