A shepherd girl playing the mandolin,
oil on canvas, 67 x 126 cm, framed
Provenance:
Christie’s auction, New York, 22 May 1998, lot 143
On the grounds of the stylistic execution and its subject, the present work is closely linked to a series of paintings by Huet (currently preserved at Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris). A feature common in Huet’s paintings is their large, creamy brushwork and brighter colour palette tending towards pastel hues, which distinguishes his works from Boucher’s. From the mid-1760s, Huet was active in Le Prince’s workshop, where he was influenced by François Boucher. He specialised in pastoral scenes, a genre that had become famous with Boucher.
